While I may still be mourning the loss of my precious Kraft Dinner and Nibs, it was inevitable that South Africa would present me with awesome, can't-live-without food items of its own.
I am seriously considering hoarding these three items in large boxes and shipping them home via ocean liner.
1. Aromat.
I wish I could describe this seasoning in more descriptive terms than yellowy-grainy, uber salty goodness... but the truth is, I cannot. That literally is the best that words can do. It is more flavorful than table salt, yet not so much so that it has its own distinct flavour.
It pretty much just salt-ifies and better-izes anything you throw it on (if only my thesis supervisor could see my vocabulary now...). Popcorn, pasta, sandwiches...
All you really have to know is that if you are a salt fiend like me, then you must track this down. Somehow. Ebay. Carrier pigeon. Whatever.
And once you've done that, let me know so I can hook myself up once I am back in Canada.
2. Cane.

It looks like vodka, tastes sorta like cointreau, and works your brain and body like tequila.
In one word: AWESOME.
And mixed with cream soda -- you can't even taste it.
3. Milo.
Hmm. This is also tricky to pin-point in regards to taste.**
Milo is akin to hot chocolate powder -- but with a twist. Less sweet and more honey-flavoured with a smidgen of saltiness.
It comes in the forms of cereal, chocolate bar, or powder (the powder is yummy on ice cream... and in milk... and on desserts...).
I have heard rumours that Milo products are available in Canada, however, I've certainly never seen it before. Can anyone out there vouch for its whereabouts??
*side note: Just realizing now how all my favorite SA food items share the odd component of being ambiguous in terms of taste. Perhaps this is why I love them so much??
