Fun, Facts, and Follies From the Last Few Weeks...
- Good old-fashioned cranberry juice does not exist in this country. They have apple/cran... cran/mixed fruit.... pomegranate/cran... butplain old, pure cranberry juice is no where to be found. My cosmo martinis are in crisis.
- Drywall is rarely used for houses. Brick and plaster are the go-to buliding materials.
- ...in the same thread, shingles are not used for roofs. Clay tiles or thatched roofing are the most popular choices.
- I am leaving this Sunday for Zinkwasi. I cannot wait to spend 9 days relaxing on the ocean, away from the big city and all forms of parental figures :)
- But! Even bigger news: on the 13th I am heading to Richards Bay to meet up with Sarah, one of my best friends from university!!!! Her parents are here on a work contract and she and her boyfriend (also a good friend of mine), will be flying into SA for Christmas vacation. I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE HER :)
- Cane is a very popular alcohol here in SA and I've fallen in love with it. It's similar to vodka in that it's clear and mixes well with juices. Most commonly though, it is mixed with cream soda. The question is: is this tasty alcoholic beverage legal for me to bring back to Canada?? And why don't we have it already?!
- This past weekend I was visited by the son of my mother's co-worker (whew - that was a mouthful). He is here in Joburg on business for a few weeks. After getting in touch with me I promptly invited him for a night on the town with the boys. We went to a bar named Gin and didn't get into bed until 4am. McD's run at 9am. I'd say the night was a total success :)

I'm jealous that Sarah gets to see you, but I hope you all have a lovely time. I'm also jealous of you beach vacation...as I write this during my prep period at the school I am currently conducting my practicum at. Excuse me while I go prepare for the huge class Grade 6s that is about to come down....one threw up last week...right on the floor...goody.
Saaa-weeet!
Hi Marie, as you can imagine the most interesting part of this post to me was the liquor. Is "cane" fermented sugar cane? if so its got to be an awful lot like rum and therefore delicious. Its also hilarious that you stay out late, get drunk and then go to macdonalds. Evidently getting sloshed isnt too much different halfway across the globe. Say hi to sarah and jason for me!
