Marie-wind! Take Eight

Fun, Facts, and Follies from the Last Few Days...
  • Salads in SA are normally eaten without any dressing! Just one big heap of plain veggies.
  • The word "fanny" in Canada means bum. The word "fanny" in South Africa, means vagina. Imagine my new-found laughter when I was watching Glee on T.V last week and a character shouts at a another character, who has Down Syndrome: "get your fanny in here!!".
  • I watched Jurassic Park for the first time this week. I know, I know, how did I manage to miss out on this cult classic? But considering I was 6 years old at the time it was released and my mother had been previously forced to physically remove me from the theater showing of Disney's, Beauty and the Beast, because I was in hysterics after the wolf scene, well... it sort of makes sense.
  • You know how we "Club" our steering wheel to deter car theft? Here, they "Gorilla" it.
  • One thing I'm not missing from home? Mosquitos! It's been amazing to have the freedom to sit outside at night, enjoying the warm evening weather and not be swarmed.
  • Didier was sweet enough to bring home a big bouquet of proteas for me. They are South Africa's national flower. They make a stunning table decoration, dontcha think? Not to mention I cannot stop touching their fuzzy petals every time I walk by :)

  • Did you know that Canada has a national cricket team? Yeah. Me neither. Before SA, I didn't even know what a cricket ball looked like. But thanks to the World Cup currently taking place, cricket mania has descended and as such, I've gotten quite familiar with the game. Imagine my surprise when I found out my own country is actually participating in the tournament! *
    • *We only won one game. I think we should stick to ice hockey.
  • African Rooibos & Honey tea by Five Roses is my new love. A large steaming cup with a dollop of creamed honey before bed = divine
  • I would like to put a big THANK YOU out there to all the lovely skype dates I've had over the past few months. This trip has been an emotional rollercoaster and now that I have the opportunity to see and speak with my friends and family regularly, it has been enhanced in so many ways. The time spent with you all online may not make up for face-to-face contact, but it sure has put extra spring in my step and joy in my life here in SA :) :)

What beautiful flowers! Do they last quite awhile or are they delicate like roses? Miss you lots!! (heart) MOM

@Mom: They're quite hearty. I'd say you get a solid week and a half. I kept mine around for a little over two weeks until they began looking old.

Marie!
I'm catching up on all of your posts that I've missed because I've been traveling or studying for exams here in the UK (ONE LEFT!!!!!!), so sorry for the late comment.

I felt the same way as you did finding out that Canada has a Cricket team. I found out a few months after I first moved to the UK almost 10 years ago now! (God I'm old!). I did have a little chuckle, however, that you called Hockey- "ice Hockey". hehehe have you started calling football- "American Football" yet? I have adapted to calling them these names now because when i call them simply hockey or 'football', there is inevitably some form of confusion.

Anyway, I can't wait to read through the rest of your posts! Have a safe trip home, and hope to see you soon. xo
